How to Know When It’s Time to Replace Your Tires

Your tires are the only part of your vehicle that actually touches the road, making them one of the most critical components for your safety, comfort, and performance. Driving on worn-out or damaged tires can increase your stopping distance, reduce fuel efficiency, and put you at greater risk of accidents. At MacMaster Buick GMC, we often hear customers ask: “How do I know when it’s time to replace my tires?”

Here’s everything you need to look out for.

1. Check Your Tread Depth

The tread on your tires is designed to grip the road and channel water away to help prevent hydroplaning. Over time, tread wears down.

The Penny Test: Insert a penny into the tire tread with the top of the coin facing down. If you can see the top of the coin, it’s time to replace your tires.

Canadian Minimum Requirement: Legally, tires must have at least 1.6 mm of tread depth. For safe driving in Ontario’s weather conditions—especially winter—we recommend replacing your tires at 3–4 mm for optimal performance.

2. Look for Uneven Wear

Uneven tire wear can signal:

  • Improper wheel alignment
  • Over- or under-inflated tires
  • Suspension issues

If one part of your tire is worn down faster than the rest, it’s time to bring your vehicle to our service centre for an inspection.

3. Cracks, Bulges, or Cuts in the Sidewall

Tire sidewalls can weaken over time due to road hazards, potholes, or age. If you spot cracks, bulges, or visible damage, your tire could be at risk of a blowout. This requires immediate replacement.

4. Vibrations While Driving

Excessive vibrations in your steering wheel or seats can indicate tire imbalance, internal tire damage, or alignment issues. If you’re experiencing this, it’s best to book a tire inspection at MacMaster Buick GMC right away.

5. Tire Age – Even if They Look Fine

Even if your tires appear to have good tread, rubber naturally degrades over time. Most manufacturers recommend replacing tires every 6–10 years regardless of tread wear.

6. Seasonal Tire Considerations in Ontario

In Ontario, winter tires aren’t just recommended—they’re essential. If your all-season tires are losing grip or your winter tires are older than 5 years, it’s worth upgrading for improved safety and control in snowy conditions.
